Joy O’Sullivan began her musical career playing a rousing version of “Yankee Doodle” on the piano for her enthralled kindergarten class. After a career in bank examination (yep that’s right), she stayed home to raise her three children. During this time she began working as a professional cantor and earned a degree in music education at CCSU, where she studied voice with Adele Paxton and organ with Bruce Henley. She has been the Director of Music at St. James since 2007 and leads the Adult, Children and Youth Choirs. She instituted the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols, and also conducts a Spring Concert. She led the Adult Choir on a triumphant Tour of Italy in 2014 and is hoping to initiate another trip to Europe in the near future. At St. James, she has the responsibility for the church environment, and loves to arrange flowers to decorate the sanctuary. Joy lives in Rocky Hill with her husband, Bill, and is also the Director of the Rocky Hill Serenaders, a group of residents who sing joyfully at nursing homes and assisted living centers.
