Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish,
In this weekend’s Gospel (Mark 10:35-45) several of Jesus’ apostles were bitten by the overly ambitious bug vying for the “top dog” position in Jesus’ new kingdom. They had done nothing worthy of note, but that did not stop them from wanting “position”. It is a very human problem, on the playground, in faculty meetings, in the board room, etc. We like to call the shots and to be top dog, but in the long term, it is not enough to make a life.
It seems that Jesus understood that. He knew that real power—power that lasts, is not about controlling people or bending them to our will. It is about setting them free, giving them hope, and helping them to find the courage for great deeds.
Think about the good people who have stretched our vision, taught us to hope and inspired us to be generous. They gave us a part of themselves, which lives on in us to this very day. That is real power, but it was never about them, just about us.
Peace and blessings!
