Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish,
Greetings and blessings!
This weekend is the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity: the powerful mystery of the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The gospel reading from John’s Gospel makes a fascinating point especially considering the world we live in and its challenges: gun violence, racial tensions, economic worries, escalating tempers and hostile words and the horror of war, not only in Ukraine, but in many portions of our globe. All of this forming a darkness that tries to hide the light of truth, hope and faith.
Not long before he died, Jesus said, I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now….” What was he talking about? Death? No, he had already told them about that. The end of the world? No, he had already said he did not know. He was talking about the dark place in our hearts, which seem so ugly and so beyond fixing that they frighten us into pretending they do not exist. It is like trying to protect ourselves from the hazards of the highway by driving with our eyes closed.
Jesus knew this about us and told us repeatedly, “Don’t be afraid.” He assured us that we can risk opening our eyes and looking squarely at the inner darkness that has terrified us. We can afford the risk, because we know that the Holy Spirit is guiding us through the dark one step at a time, giving us the power to light up our darkness one room at a time.
Let us renew our assurance of the Spirit’s presence who assists us to keep our light vibrantly and confidently “on.” In the light of that same Spirit, may we not only think and pray for the light to shine forth in the darkness of the issues of our day…. but more importantly let us DO something empowered by that ever-present Spirit within us so to have influence in this world
Last weekend it was an honor to witness our own young adult parishioners receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit as they received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, confirmed by Archbishop Blair. May the light of the Spirit ever shine in and through these young disciples of Christ.
I wish you and yours continued blessings!!
