Big News from the Archdiocese, Summer Projects, Faith Formation Registration, and more....

June 27, 2023

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish,

I would like to begin by sharing the early Monday morning announcement from the Archdiocese of Hartford. Pope Francis has appointed the Most Reverent Christopher J. Coyne as Coadjutor Archbishop of Hartford:

In addition to the big news from the Archdiocese of Hartford, I'd like to share about a few capital improvement projects planned for this summer:

  1. As you may already know we have a Shrine to Saint Anthony in the back parking area at Saint James. Saint Anthony is a popular saint for many reasons; therefore, we get a great deal of traffic to the Shrine. People offer prayers of intercession and light candles for intentions. Due to the age of the Shrine, wear-and-tear from the weather and inappropriate, yet unintentional, damage from misplaced candles…we are in serious need of refurbishing the Shrine. We have a mason who will begin the work immediately. Also, we will be pulling out all shrubs due to potential fires due to misplaced candles and encircling the Shrine with stones to avoid further problems with fires. I have received one $500 gift toward the project. However, the project will cost approximately $4000. So, if you would like to make an extra donation for the project, please send gifts to the main office (all checks made to St. Josephine Bakhita Parish with a notation referring to St. Anthony Shrine repairs).
  2. We have discovered that one of the stone walls near the front patio at St. James is getting closer and closer to collapse. We will begin the work on repairing the wall by the same mason once he completes the Shrine repairs. This repair will be approximately $14,000. The funds for this project will come from the proceeds from the Bishops’ Foundation Campaign (Forward in Faith). Thank you to those who generously participated in this campaign. Therefore, the project to redo the front patio at St. James will be postponed to another later date. There should be minimal disruption of front door entry during this repair. The handicapped ramp may be closed for a short period of time. Therefore, make plans to enter by the rear of the church.
  3. The second phase of the repaving project for the parking lots at St. James will commence in the last two weeks of September after the annual parish picnic. The project will cost approximately $141,000. The project will be accomplished through the very generous gift of a parishioner.

Peace and blessings!

Fr. George Couturier

Outdoor Places to Pray

at Saint Josephine Bakhita

Now that the warm weather has arrived, consider taking your preferred prayer style to a quiet place on the grounds of either church campus.

Saint James campus offers several outdoor spots: the Labyrinth behind the church/next to the parish center as well as the benches between the two buildings. Other prayerful spots include the statue of Christ behind the center as well as on the tree covered lawns near the church.

At Saint Elizabeth Seton campus, a garden devoted to Mary is a good spot for prayer and lies across from the church with benches (and has a lending library, too!). A sheltered gazebo sits in a shaded spot opposite the rectory. Benches on the church porch during the week offer quiet as well.

Inside or outside of either campus, there are peaceful places to pray. Visit our church properties and spend time with our Lord.
