Daly Summer Notes

This is a deserted place, and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” Matthew 14:15–16.

My Friends,

Receiving the Eucharist empowers us to serve the needs of those around us.  The key is in Jesus’ words, “Give them something some food yourselves.” He would not allow the disciples to send the crowds away hungry. And He would not hear that there wasn’t enough for everyone. Jesus expected His followers to feed those people. No excuses.

In today’s world we are faced with incredible needs. There are so many poor and hurting people. We can be overwhelmed by it all. The temptation is to throw up our hands and say there’s nothing we can do. But if that is our attitude then we cannot claim to be Christians. If we are indifferent to the needs of others, then receiving Holy Communion, even every day, is doing us little good.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Shawn
