Summer News from Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish

August 18, 2026

Dear Friends,

The one gathering on the parish calendar that I look forward to the most is almost here!

The Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish Picnic takes place every year on the Sunday after Labor Day.  This year it is planned for Sunday, September 13, beginning with a joyful Mass at 11:30 AM, followed by our picnic celebration at 12:30 PM on the beautiful grounds of Saint James Church. I warmly and enthusiastically invite every member of our parish community to join us.

There is something about this day that captures everything I love about Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish. It begins in prayer and spills out into an afternoon of laughter, conversation, and connection — children of all ages running and playing games beneath the shade of the trees behind the Parish Center, families spreading out on the lawn, old friends catching up and new ones being made. It is fellowship at its most joyful and most human. And it is, I think, the perfect way to begin a new pastoral year and faith formation season together.

This year’s menu has a fresh look — we are serving sandwiches, chips, and all the picnic favorites. There is no fee to attend, but we do need to know you are coming so that we can order enough food for everyone. Please RSVP using the link below.

As always, we will need many willing hands to make the day run smoothly. Food servers, dessert bakers, game organizers, and helpers to stack chairs and tables at the end of the afternoon — every role matters, and many hands truly do make light work! A simple volunteer sign-up form is available below, and a member of our Picnic Planning Committee will be in touch with everything you need to know.

Finally, we carry on our tradition of bringing donated food items for Amazing Grace Food Pantry. This year they are especially in need of canned soups, canned vegetables, and boxed cereal. Collection bins will be available on the day of the picnic — please bring what you can.

Mark your calendar. Make your plans. We cannot wait to see you on September 13 — for a day of faith, fellowship, and fun that I promise you will not want to miss.

Music Notes

Thank you to all who wrote me notes with your favorite songs in the past few weeks! Your input is appreciated, and I am working to include them in our liturgies.

SAVE THE DATE! Sunday November 1, 2026 at 3:00 PM at St. James, we will present a wonderful concert to support our sister parish in Haiti. More details soon! If you would like to sing with us for this concert, please send me an email at rochellebard@gmail.com for more information.

CHILDREN/YOUTH CHOIR: Now is the time to sign up to sing! I am looking for children and teens to join us from both churches. You will be an important part of monthly liturgies, the Haiti Concert in November, and Christmas! Rehearsal dates and times will be determined soon. Please email me at rochellebard@gmail.com. The only prerequisite is an ability to read. Whether you have experience singing or not, I would love to have you!

Saint Elizabeth Seton Campus Garden

Update & Request for Help

You’ve hopefully read my bulletin & Newsletter appeal for gardening help at Saint Elizabeth Seton. One person has taken on the care of the Marion Garden: cleaning the statue of Mary when needed and managing the shrubs, flowers and weeding.

Apparently, a few people have tried to contact my email but their messages were not received -not even found in the junk folders.

Don’t give up!! Taking on another small garden area will keep the church looking joyful! Call the office -860-529-8655 – leave a message or chat with Carrie or Pam and they’ll contact me. We’ll help you get started.
